Per Piccola Opera della Divina Provvidenza si intende l'insieme delle fondazioni che hanno preso avvio direttamente per iniziativa di Don Orione o, dopo la sua morte, come sviluppo di sue precedenti indicazioni.
A costituire la Piccola Opera della Divina Provvidenza (chiamata anche "la grande Famiglia orionina") è la condivisione dell'identico carisma e la comunione con le altre componenti della medesima "pianta unica ma con molti rami, tutti vivificati dalla stessa linfa" (Don Orione).


FIGLI DELLA DIVINA PROVVIDENZA Consacrati per portare i piccoli, i poveri, il popolo alla Chiesa e al Papa, per 'instaurare omnia in Christo', mediante le opere della carità.
Fratelli Religiosi laici che vivono il cammino di santità e di apostolato nella Chiesa, in collaborazione con i religiosi sacerdoti.
Eremiti Contemplativi che, in comunità, vivono la donazione a Dio nel silenzio, nella preghiera e nel lavoro, "cuore orante" della Famiglia orionina.

PICCOLE SUORE MISSIONARIE DELLA CARITÀ Missionarie della Carità, cioè di Dio, con l'esercizio della carità, per far sperimentare la Provvidenza di Dio e la maternità della Chiesa.
Sacramentine non vedenti Personificano nell'Istituto la preghiera, a sostegno del lavoro delle suore, dei sacerdoti e dei missionari impegnati nell'apostolato della carità.
Contemplative di Gesù Crocifisso Nel silenzio della clausura prolungano il ringraziamento e l'offerta a Gesù Crocifisso per la redenzione delle Anime.

ISTITUTO SECOLARE ORIONINO Sono laici, consacrate e consacrati con voti, che vivono il carisma orionino "come lievito nascosto", restando nei loro ambienti ordinari di famiglia, di lavoro e di apostolato.

MOVIMENTO LAICALE ORIONINO Comprende le varie associazioni e categorie di laici che, "dentro e fuori" alle istituzioni, condividono lo spirito e il servizio proprio del carisma orionino.

FIGLI DELLA DIVINA PROVVIDENZA

Il generoso programma della vita di Don Orione era quello di “abbracciare tutte le anime e salvarle tutte, tutte” (Scr. 115,142), “vivere di amore al Papa, e diffondere, specialmente nei piccoli negli umili, nel popolo, il più dolce amore al Papa, e l’obbedienza piena e filiale alla sua parola e ai suoi desideri” (Lettere II, 41-47). Ciò implicava, necessariamente, anche il progetto di formare dei discepoli e collaboratori che condividessero lo stesso carisma e lo stesso progetto apostolico.


La fondazione e formazione

Don Orione fu fondatore a 21 anni, ancora chierico. Il primo collegio aperto a Tortona (1893) già nacque con intenti e stile propri. Fra la quarantina dei primi allievi della prima Casa della Divina Provvidenza in San Bernardino, a Tortona, un buon terzo erano giovinetti che sarebbero andati in seminario, se le loro famiglie avessero potuto pagarne la retta. Sei di essi infatti indossarono l’abito clericale lo stesso giorno che Don Orione fu ordinato sacerdote (13 aprile 1895). Cinque mesi dopo, sul primo bollettino “La Scintilla”, venivano presentati con la loro denominazione ufficiale: Figli della Divina Provvidenza.
Don Orione dedicò le sue più delicate attenzioni a questi primi chierici, poiché essi rappresentavano le promettenti speranze per il futuro apostolato. Giunto il gruppetto ad una dozzina (1895), li inviò a Genova perché compissero gli studi liceali, sotto la guida di Gaspare Goggi.
Fra i nomi dei primi aspiranti del nuovo Istituto, eccellono quelli di: Felice Cribellati e Giulio Cremaschi; l’uno fu il primo vescovo della Congregazione e il secondo esercitò, per oltre trent’anni, l’ufficio di Maestro dei Novizi. Una bella promettente aurora! Saranno molte le stelle della “costellazione Orione”.

Il primo inizio di formazione religiosa si ebbe nel 1898, con l’apertura del Convitto San Luigi di Noto, in Sicilia. Vi furono mandati, come assistenti, solo “quelli che son decisi di fermarsi con noi”, scriveva Don Orione, dopo aver detto loro “franchissimamente” che il servizio prestato laggiù doveva servire da “vero Noviziato”(Scr. 10,20). Iniziò così la storia dei Figli della Divina Provvidenza.
La Congregazione ebbe la approvazione diocesana, da parte di Mons. Bandi, a Tortona con decreto del 21.3.1903. I rapidi sviluppi successivi sono raccontati nella vita di Don Orione e ne formano parte integrante. Il Fondatore fu soprattutto il formatore della sua Famiglia religiosa. Nel ceppo dei “Figli della Divina Provvidenza”, Don Orione distinse il ramo degli “Eremiti della Divina Provvidenza” e dei “Fratelli coadiutori”.

Nel 1913 iniziò l’attività delle missioni fuori Italia con la partenza di un sacerdote e due fratelli per il Brasile, subito seguiti da altre spedizioni per l’Argentina e la Terrasanta. Don Orione stesso fu missionario in America Latina (Brasile, Argentina, Uruguay e Cile) negli anni 1921-22 e 1934-37.
Tra gli anni venti e trenta, mentre continuava l’assistenza alla gioventù con orfanotrofi, colonie agricole e Istituti di istruzione, si accentuò l’impegno nella cura pastorale ad altre categorie di bisognosi; si sviluppò l’attività assistenziale nei Piccoli Cottolengo, per persone con gravi handicap fisici e psichici, e nelle Case di Riposo per anziani e persone sole.
Un buon sviluppo del numero dei Figli della Divina Provvidenza si ebbe negli ultimi anni di vita del Fondatore, frutto delle sue famose questue per le vocazioni degli anni Trenta. L’aumento del personale religioso permise l’apertura di nuove opere, reclamate dalle necessità emergenti sia nel campo educativo-assitenziale come in quello pastorale.


Scopo e programma

Dovendo presentare lo scopo e programma di vita della Congregazione - oggi si direbbe il carisma - Don Orione fissò il programma essenziale nei seguenti termini:
- "compiere la volontà di Dio nella volontà del Beato Pietro, il Sommo Pontefice"; - "impiegarsi, con ogni opera di misericordia, a spargere e crescere nel popolo cristiano - e specialmente nell'evangelizzare i poveri, i piccoli, gli afflitti da ogni male e dolore - un amore dolcissimo al Vicario in terra di Nostro Signore Gesù Cristo che è il Romano Pontefice, Successore del Beato Apostolo Pietro, con l'intendimento di concorrere a rafforzare, nell'interno della Santa Chiesa, l'unità dei figli col Padre, nell'esterno, a ripristinare l'unità spezzata col Padre".

Volle per i suoi figli un quarto voto di “speciale fedeltà al Papa” e dichiarò più volte: “Questo fine - unire al Papa per instaurare omnia in Christo - è proprio di nostra vocazione".

Le Costituzioni, alle quali egli stesso provvide fin dai primi abbozzi e nelle successive stesure, bene interpretano oggi il carisma orionino nelle sue linee di spiritualità e di apostolato.

Attualmente i Figli della Divina Provvidenza sono 1023: 4 vescovi, 728 sacerdoti, 82 fratelli, 8 eremiti. In formazione ci sono 201 chierici e 19 fratelli di voti temporanei, 45 novizi. Gli aggregati sono 7. L'età media dei religiosi è di anni 50,1. Sono riuniti in 8 Province, 2 Vice-Province e 3 Delegazioni.
I Figli della Divina Provvidenza sono presenti e svolgono le loro opere in circa 300 località di 29 nazioni.

I FRATELLI

L’oratorio (1892), il collegio di S. Bernardino (1893), il collegio S. Chiara (1894): sono i primi passi della fondazione di Don Orione. Contemporaneamente, attorno a Don Orione andava costituendosi un nucleo di primi discepoli che formeranno l’incipiente congregazione religiosa dei Figli della Divina Provvidenza. Da questo primo nucleo vennero i primi sacerdoti, cui fecero seguito gli Eremiti (1889) che sono da considerarsi come i primi religiosi laici della Piccola Opera della Divina Provvidenza.
Non vi è una data precisa per la costituzione del ramo dei Fratelli coadiutori, distinti dai Fratelli eremiti. Sta il fatto che nelle prime Regole manoscritte del 1904, all’art. 4, si legge: “...i membri di questa congregazione sono o laici o Sacerdoti, i laici si chiameranno Fratelli...”. Tra i primi Fratelli laici, non eremiti, ci sono sicuramente Michele Volpini e Rotta Pasquale, i quali fecero i loro primi voti rispettivamente, l’8 Dicembre 1912, a Tortona, e il 15 Agosto 1920, a Bandito di Bra.
Don Orione, sin dagli inizi, intese i Fratelli come membri insostituibili della sua Famiglia religiosa dedita ad opere multiformi. Li inserì nelle più svariate attività della Congregazione: nelle scuole, nelle opere caritative, nelle missioni.
Nella Lettera-questua delle vocazioni, del 1927, Don Orione scrive: “Pel carattere proprio di questa Congregazione, vengo in questua di vocazioni di adulti: sia pel sacerdozio che per Fratelli laici o coadiutori. Ricevo tutti quelli che si sentono chiamati e validi a darmi una mano per esercitare l'Apostolato della Carità nei Collegi, Oratori festivi, nelle Colonie agricole, nelle scuole professionali, come pure negli Ospizi, Case di ricovero, e altre opere che la Mano della Provvidenza va aprendo a salvezza della gioventù o a conforto degli umili”.

Svolgono attività apostoliche di evangelizzazione, di orientamento vocazionale, di catechesi, di assistenza agli anziani e ai minorati fisici e mentali; sono impegnati nelle scuole e nelle parrocchie; sono economi, infermieri, impiegati nelle Poste vaticane... tuttofare, ovunque ci sia un bisogno e qualcosa di bene da compiere. Ci sono iniziative specifiche per la loro formazione.
Negli scritti di Don Orione si trovano notizie e insegnamenti del Fondatore circa i Fratelli. Ad esempio, ebbe a scrivere che “virtù proprie dei Fratelli coadiutori devono essere: devozione, umiltà, pace dell’anima, purità di coscienza, docilità, generosità” (Scr. 75,20).
Dedicati ai poveri e ai bisognosi, i Fratelli ne curano la ascesa e promozione umana e sociale. Attualmente, sono 88 i Fratelli nella Congregazione dei Figli della Divina Provvidenza. I nuclei più consistenti sono presenti in Italia (27), Argentina (24), Brasile (14); altri sono in Costa d’Avorio, Polonia, Uruguay, Spagna e in altre Province.

Nelle Costituzioni e Norme di essi si dice:
Art. 54: “Sacerdoti, chierici, fratelli coadiutori, eremiti, pur con diversi ministeri e diverse mansioni, ci sentiamo un’unica famiglia”.
Art. 57: “I Fratelli coadiutori, avendo seguito l’invito ad abbracciare la vita religiosa laicale, hanno scelto uno stato in sè completo e significativo. La loro consacrazione li inserisce a pieno titolo nell’azione pastorale della Chiesa e della Congregazione. Secondo le esigenze dell’azione apostolica, valorizzando i doni ricevuti, lavorano con gioia, umiltà e generoso sacrificio, accanto ai confratelli sacerdoti”.
Art. 103: “I religiosi coadiutori, dopo la Prima professione, continuano in una comunità adatta la loro formazione religiosa e, secondo le personali attitudini e le necessità della Congregazione, frequentano corsi di istruzione superiore e di specializzazione professionale”.
Norma 31: “I Fratelli coadiutori possono ricoprire l’ufficio di economo della casa, di incaricato d’opere e di consigliere a tutti i livelli”.

EREMITI DELLA DIVINA PROVVIDENZA

Don Orione comprese fin dagli inizi l’importanza della presenza in seno alla Piccola Opera della Divina Provvidenza di un ramo di religiosi contemplativi. Già nel 1899, con la vestizione dei primi tre eremiti, a Stazzano, il 30 luglio, Don Orione diede avvio alla famiglia degli “Eremiti della Divina Provvidenza”. Affidò agli Eremiti i compiti della preghiera, della penitenza e del lavoro in una vita semplice, austera e fraterna. I primi Eremiti si occuparono anche dell’asssistenza e dell’istruzione dei piccoli lavoratori dei campi, nelle “colonie agricole”; altri si dedicarono alla rinascita e custodia di antichi eremitaggi.
Sant’Alberto di Butrio (PV) e Monte Spineto (AL) sono i luoghi delle loro origini. Nei primi anni gli Eremiti faticarono nelle “colonie agricole” di Noto, Roma e Bagnorea, passando, in seguito, anche in Terrasanta, a Rodi e fino in Uruguay, terminando poi con l’attendere alla loro particolare vocazione negli antichi eremitaggi di Sant’Alberto di Butrio (PV), Madonna delle Grazie a Sant’Oreste (Roma) e San Corrado a Noto (SR): una vita di preghiera e di lavoro.

L’eremita più rappresentativo è certamente Frate Ave Maria (1900-1964). Rimasto cieco a 12 anni, dopo un periodo di disperazione giovanile, incontrò la grazia di Dio attraverso la paternità di Don Orione. Divenne eremita e trascorse l’intera sua vita in penitenza e preghiera, nella ricerca costante della santità luce e conforto per tante anime che a lui ricorrevano nelle tribolazioni della vita. La fama di santità l’accompagnò in vita e divenne devozione dopo la santa morte (21.1.1964). Di lui è in corso la causa di beatificazione.

Attualmente, gli Eremiti della Divina Provvidenza sono tutti riuniti nell’Eremo di Sant’Alberto di Butrio (PV), mèta spirituale e artistica di grande interesse per molti pellegrini che salgono lassù. Gli Eremiti sono una grazia di Dio per tutta la Piccola Opera della Divina Provvidenza. Sono “i nostri Mosè sul monte”, come li definiva Don Orione.

La loro vita è descritta e regolata in un proprio Spirito e Regolamento che racoglie le indicazioni di spiritualità e disciplina date da Don Orione stesso e attualizzate successivamente.

Qual’è il significato della presenza degli eremiti nella Famiglia orionina e nella società di oggi? Ce lo dice Don Orione stesso in uno scritto immediatamente precedente la loro fondazione. L’eremita fu sempre qualche cosa di caro nella religione, è un essere che deve pur vivere nell’Opera della Divina Provvidenza: vivervi quasi sacrificio continuato, continua voce di amore a Gesù per la solitudine dei fratelli!
L’eremita! Uomo che rinunzia alle gioie della famiglia, alle ricchezze, a tutto che è quaggiù, e se ne va all’eremo a piegare la fronte al cenno d’un fratello, che sulla terra gli tiene le veci di Dio. Egli segue i consigli di Gesù, e promette osservarli tutti i giorni della vita. E’ della milizia che si stringe più da vicino al Signore: l’amore di Gesù gli rende facile ogni prova più ardua, fa soave e desiderabile ogni sacrificio.
La società è in pericolo , perché l’oro è un idolo che ormai tiene luogo di tutto: di fede, di religione, di onore. La società è in pericolo perché la disonestà allaga, spegne le intelligenze, infiacchisce la gioventù. La società è in pericolo perché ormai regna l’orgoglio, l’insubordinazione, la ribellione negli spiriti.
Per allontanare questo triplice pericolo, il mondo ha bisogno di vedersi innanzi le virtù opposte. Ebbene eccovi gli eremiti! Quale predica e quanto efficace faranno questi servi di Dio, mostrandosi, nei loro costumi e nella pratica della vita, così diversi dagli altri!
Ben sorgano e si moltiplichino gli eremiti della Divina Provvidenza, perfezionino le loro anime . Siano loro i nostri fratelli della preghiera specialmente, i fratelli che fanno piovere le benedizioni del cielo sulle nostre fatiche, sui nostri, giovani, sui loro studi e su tutti i nostri carissimi benefattori.
Aprano, nei loro romitaggi, un asilo a noi, nei giorni agitati della vita: aprano un asilo a tutti gli oppressi, a tutti i cuori straziati dagli sconforti e dai dolori. E l’orazione alternino al lavoro manuale. Dal loro volto scenda il raggio della pace... Con le virtù e con la preghiera tengano sospesa la mano di Dio sugli uomini peccatori...
Oh sorgete, dunque, sorgete, pieno il cuore di amore a Gesù, o eremiti fratelli! Io saluto la vostra venuta come una benedizione del Signore, e m’inchino davanti a voi, chiamati a fare tanto bene! (Don Orione I, 518-521)

PICCOLE SUORE MISSIONARIE DELLA CARITÀ

Don Orione comprese che, per una maggior estensione ed azione della “Piccola Opera della Divina Provvidenza” e per fare del bene soprattutto in settori più consoni alla donna, c’era bisogno di una famiglia religiosa femminile: donne di fede, con cuore di madre, magnanimi e gentili, anime amanti di Dio e tenere verso il prossimo.

Le Piccole Suore Missionarie della Carità sono un Istituto di Suore fondato da Don Orione il 29 giugno 1915, in Tortona. Egli personalmente ne curò la formazione, diede preciso indirizzo spirituale ed apostolico.

Lo scopo della Congregazione è quello di attuare la carità in un vasto campo di bisogni, per essere madri, sorelle e serve degli abbandonati e reietti; missionarie in patria e “ad gentes”. Sono chiamate ad essere evangelizzatrici nel mondo, per diffondere il Vangelo, per unire i piccoli, i poveri e il popolo alla Chiesa.
Le loro vie di azione sono: educare la gioventù, togliere le ragazze e i bambini dalla strada e dal vizio, fare la catechesi, vivere la carità nei Piccolo Cottolengo e nelle opere della carità verso gli handicappati fisici e psichici, i lebbrosi, i vecchi, gli ammalati, la gioventù, i bambini e le loro famiglie e verso “quanti hanno una pena e un dolore”.
La missionarietà delle PSMC nella Chiesa e nel mondo sta all’origine: nel nome Missionarie che significa “evangelizzatrici - e serve dei poveri - perché nei poveri noi serviamo, confortiamo ed evangelizziamo Gesù Cristo”, e si esprime nelle opere, secondo l’orientamento dato dal Fondatore: fin dai primi anni della loro fondazione sono aperte ai bisogni i più diversi del mondo. Sono intraprendenti anche nel campo della missione di frontiera; Don Orione stesso, inviò le prime sei suore in Argentina, nel 1930.

La loro identità e la loro forma di vita è descritto nelle Costituzioni.
La Congregazione ha al suo interno il ramo delle Sacramentine non vedenti adoratrici e la comunità di clausura delle Contemplative di Gesù Crocifisso. Attualmente a Congregazione è divisa in 5 Province, le Suore sono 850, di esse quelle in formazione, di voti temporanei, sono 105; le novizie sono 39.
Le PSMC sono presenti in 121 località di 17 paesi: Europa: Italia, Spagna, Albania, Polonia, Ucraina, Russia; America Latina: Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brasile, Cile, Perù; America del Nord: U.S.A.; Africa: Capo Verde, Kenya, Madagascar e Costa D’Avorio.
Le Suore attuano la carità nell’esercizio della pastorale giovanile, scuole, casa di riposo, piccoli Cottolengo, catechesi e oratorio, con le nuove povertà e nell’esigenza dei tempi e dei luoghi...e là dove la Divina Provvidenza le vuole inviare. Ave Maria e avanti!

SACRAMENTINE ADORATRICI NON VEDENTI

Don Orione concepì la famiglia religiosa femminile - Piccole Suore Missionarie della Carità – come composta di tante diramazioni, i cui membri dovranno vivere della carità di Gesù Cristo, portarla in mezzo al mondo, ardere e consumarsi vittime dell’amore di Dio. Tutto per il bene e la salvezza delle Anime e dei popoli.

Le Suore Sacramentine non vedenti furono fondate da Don Orione, il 15 agosto 1927, per essere ed esprimere nella Chiesa la figura del Cristo orante. Una simile fondazione di suore, tutte cieche, costituì una vera rivoluzione nel contesto storico di allora. Quando la discriminazione sociale, anche per motivi di natura fisica, era più forte dei nostri giorni, Don Orione ha fatto capire che il carisma è un dono per essere condiviso da tuti e senza frontiere: “c’è un posto per tutti!”, “basta amare tanto il Signore, la Chiesa e il prossimo”. In esse, il limite della cecità fu così valorizzato come una condizione positiva per la propria consacrazione al Signore e l’impegno apostolico della preghiera e della testimonianza.

Le comunità delle Sacramentine sono di clausura, ma con possibilità di contatti con le persone per l’apostolato della testimonianza, del conforto spirituale, della preghiera. Don Orione spiegò che “Alcune suore suggerirono di mettere la grata. Ce l’hanno già - risposi; lasciate che le vedano. La loro serenità è un continuo apostolato. Anche con gli occhi e le orecchie chiuse si può amare tanto Nostro Signore, sacrificarsi per lui, ed essere sue spose”.

Hanno il medesimo carisma di Don Orione. La loro identità è presentata nelle Costituzioni delle Piccole Suore Missionarie della Carità all’art.15: “Le Suore Sacramentine vivono, come Maria, nel cuore stesso della Chiesa. La loro missione specifica è l’adorazione, il ringraziamento, la riparazione, l’impetrazione in unione a Gesù mediatore e vittima: vivendo lo spirito eucaristico per una vera testimonianza di vita eminentemente apostolica, con vera pietà liturgica, e nascondimento fecondo”.
Attualmente le Sacramentine sono circa una cinquantina ed hanno comunità in Italia, Argentina, Cile, Brasile, Kenia.

La più recente diramazione delle Piccole Suore Missionarie della Carità è costituita dalla comunità di clausura delle Contemplative di Gesù Crocifisso che vive nel monastero di Tortona (Italia).
Le Suore Contemplative di Gesù Crocifisso erano state solo pensate dal Beato Luigi Orione e ne lasciò una indicazione in un suo scritto.

La fondazione di questa Comunità contemplativa è avvenuta con il Capitolo generale 1987, sulla base degli scritti di D. Orione e del desiderio di un gruppo di suore. E’ nel 1990, che la prima Comunità contemplativa è stata formata.
Esse vivono in clausura, con stile, ritmi e tempi di vita propri della vita contemplativa. Vi accedono giovani desiderose di vivere la carità in una offerta di sé totale e riservata a Dio, impetrando benedizione e fecondità sull’apostolato della Piccola Opera della Divina Provvidenza e della Chiesa. Anche alcune suore che, dopo tanti anni di lavoro per i poveri, desiderano ritirarsi per stare con quel Gesù che hanno servito nei poveri, possono a suo tempo avere le porte aperte della clausura.
Le Contemplative di Gesù Crocifisso seguono le Costituzioni delle Piccole Suore Missionarie della Carità e la loro vita è regolata da un apposito “Regolamento”, approvato dalla competente Autorità ecclesiastica.

La finalità specifica delle Suore contemplative è:
“Vivere in olocausto nella perfetta carità al servizio di Dio, per il bene della Chiesa e dei fratelli più poveri. Nella contemplazione di Gesù Crocifisso, mediante una vita semplice, silenziosa, nascosta e immolata con Cristo in Dio, intendono realizzare il progetto del Beato Don Luigi Orione dell’INSTAURARE OMNIA IN CHRISTO per fare unità col Papa e i poveri e con le sorelle di vita attiva.”

Don Orione, scrivendo le prime Costituzioni del 1904, al n. 77, aveva aperto la porta della Piccola Opera a quei laici "che anelano con tutto l'animo di seguire la perfezione, e sarebbero disposti di fare i voti, se fosse loro dato".

A quel tempo, non esisteva la forma di consacrazione laicale negli Istituti Secolari, approvata dalla Chiesa nel 1947 con la "Provida Mater Ecclesia". L'intuizione del Fondatore si realizzò quando, nel 1959, per iniziativa del Superiore generale Don Carlo Pensa e con il sostegno dei sacerdoti orionini, prese avvio l'Istituto Secolare Orinino come “ramo” di quella "pianta unica, ma con diversi rami, vivificati tutti dall'unica linfa" che è la Piccola Opera della Divina Provvidenza.

L'Istituto Secolare è composto di laici consacrati con voti, che vivono nel proprio ambiente abituale (secolare). Non lasciano la propria casa e l'ambiente di lavoro, anzi, vi devono essere ben dentro. Quello è il loro ambiente di consacrazione e di missione: presenti come il"lievito" e come il "sale nella massa", cioè in modo nascosto, nel mondo. Non hanno istituzioni pubbliche, comunità, segni di riconoscimento. Vivono lo spirito orionino, si ritrovano per tempi di formazione, di sostegno comunitario (ritiri, incontri, ecc.) ed altre iniziative.

L'Istituto Secolare Orionino, oggi, è sviluppato soprattutto nel ramo femminile. Le Consacrate sono presenti in Italia, in Argentina, in Brasile; nuclei più piccoli sono in Cile, Uruguay, Venezuela, Costa d’Avorio, Polonia.
Sono organizzate con un consiglio generale e tre consigli regionali (Italia, Argentina, Brasile); ogni gruppo regionale comprende più gruppi locali.

MOVIMENTO LAICALE ORIONINO

Il carisma orionino, in quanto dono particolare dello Spirito per seguire Cristo e vivere il Vangelo, per il bene e la missione della Chiesa, è "cattolico", cioè è destinato a tutti i popoli e culture, è adatto a tutte le epoche e situazioni storiche, è destinato a tutte le categorie del popolo cristiano. Anche ai laici!

La vita di Don Orione documenta come egli coinvolse i laici fin dagli inizi della fondazione della Piccola Opera della Divina Provvidenza. Li formò spiritualmente; li preparò per collaborare "dentro e fuori" delle sue opere nell'apostolato della "carità che apre gli occhi della fede" e che "stringe i piccoli i poveri, il popolo alla Chiesa e al Papa, per Instaurare omnia in Christo".
La presenza dei laici, come singoli e come associazioni, è parte integrante della identità e della storia della Piccola Opera della Divina Provvidenza.

Nella nuova situazione ecclesiale, la Famiglia orionina ha avviato un progetto unitario di Movimento Laicale Orionino (MLO). E' il frutto dell'orientamento dato dai Capitoli generali dei Figli della Divina Provvidenza (1992) e delle Piccole Suore Missionarie della Carità (1993) e promosso con la lettera programmatica del Direttore generale, Don Roberto Simionato, del 18.12.1995 ed ebbe il suo atto di nascita di ufficiale durante il Convegno internazionale di Rocca di Papa (Roma), 10-14 ottobre 1997.

In ogni Nazione di presenza orionina, Religiosi, Suore e Laici orionini hanno costituito dei Coordinamenti del MLO, una struttura stabile di comunione. In una "Carta di comunione del Movimento Laicale Orionino" sono state raccolte le linee spirituali e operative che sono di riferimento per un cammino unitario. Favorire il 'collegamento' e la 'formazione al carisma' delle tante e diverse realtà di laici orionini sono i servizi specifici offerti dal Coordinamento del MLO.

OBLATI ORIONINI

All'interno del Movimento Laicale Orionino, è nata l'esperienza di alcune persone che hanno il desiderio di "consacrare" la loro vita al Signore, con Don Orione, pur non intendendo professare i voti, a motivo di altra scelta di vita.
Recentemente, sono sorti in varie nazioni alcuni gruppi di "Oblazione laicale orionina”. Chi sono questi laici? Che cosa si prefiggono?
Sono uomini e donne, celibi e sposati, di diversa età, professione e posizione sociale: in comune hanno la gioia di aver "incontrato Don Orione", attraverso le sue opere e i suoi religiosi, e la volontà di fare di questa amicizia un motivo dinamico della loro vita spirituale e del loro impegno civile ed ecclesiale.
Si offrono al Signore (oblazione) in modo stabile, ecclesiale e comunitario, con un cammino di Gruppo. Si ritrovano per incontri e ritiri, pregano, si scambiano esperienze di vita, studiano lo spirito orionino per essere "cristiani come lui" e per vivere con il suo stile in ogni ambiente. Anche loro vogliono, come laici, portare nella Chiesa e nel mondo, il carisma orionino di ecclesialità-papalinità mediante la carità.
E' una forma di essere Orionini oggi non ancora istituzionalizzata, ma esistono alcune linee ideali e pratiche che ne regolano il fine, i mezzi e le modalità.

Valorizzando la preziosa esperienza giovanile di educazione in una casa orionina, lo scopo dell'Associazione è quello di aiutare gli Ex allievi a vivere la vita cristiana ed esserne apostoli, attuare gli ideali del Fondatore, di fedeltà alla Chiesa, al Papa e ai Vescovi, e di servizio ai poveri.

MOVIMENTO "TRA NOI"

Sorto per l'iniziativa del sacerdote orionino Don Sebastiano Plutino, il Movimento "Tra Noi" ha il fine di "accogliere e di aiutare ogni persona, principalmente la più emarginata e indifesa, come figlia dell'unico Padre, senza distinzione di classe, religione, cultura, promuovendo un'autentica fraternità universale nello spirito del Beato Luigi Orione, al quale si ispira il Movimento stesso" (art 2 dello Statuto).
Svolge attività di "accoglienza di ciascuna persona e l'aiuto fraterno; gli incontri di formazione spirituale, religiosa e sociale; gli incontri di aggiornamento socio-culturale e professionale; l'istituzione di opere, centri formativi e ricreativi che promuovono la spiritualità dell'accoglienza ed altre attività rispondenti al carisma del Movimento e alle esigenze dei tempi" (Art.4 dello Statuto).
Il Movimento "Tra Noi" è stato riconosciuto come "Associazione privata di fedeli" (7.12.1995) sulla base di un proprio Statuto.

All’interno del Movimento “Tra Noi”, fondato dall’orionino Don Sebastiano Plutino, alcuni membri decisero di consacrarsi nel mondo per vivere la spiritualità dell'accoglienza in ogni ambiente, quale 'vena profondissima che pervade ogni strato sociale'. Nacque così l'Istituto Maria di Nazaret. Fu approvato prima come “Pia Unione” (Roma, 1967) ed ha poi ottenuto l’approvazione come Istituto Secolare (Roma, 2000).

E' un'associazione di laici costituita nel 1993, a Roma, che intende impegnare tutti i membri a mettere generosamente a titolo gratuito il proprio tempo e le proprie capacità, con spirito cristiano e atteggiamento di solidarietà, al servizio di chi ha più bisogno. E' riconosciuta dallo Stato italiano ed è regolato da un proprio Statuto.

THE LITTLE WORK OF DIVINE PROVIDENCE PRESENTED BY DON ORIONE


“The Little Work of Divine Providence,
in order to sow Christ, faith and civilization
in the most humble and most needy parts of mankind,
uses different forms and methods,
creates and sustains diverse institutions.
Its desire is to spread among the people the Gospel
and love for the Pope, “the sweet Christ on earth”,
as well as a more living

The Little Work of Divine Providence comprises several different foundations either started by Don Orione or developed from them after his death.
It is in the sharing of an identical charism and in the communion between all the various components of that “single plant with many branches, all nourished by the same sap” (Don Orione) that the Little Work of Divine Providence (also known as the “Family of Don Orione”) finds its unity.


THE SONS OF DIVINE PROVIDENCE , consecrated to bring the little ones, the poor, the people, to the Church and to the Pope, to “instaurare omnia in Christo”, by means of works of charity.
Religious Brothers who assist the priests by their holiness and apostolate in the Church.
Contemplative Hermits who, in community, in silence, in prayer and in work, give themselves to God as the “praying hearts” of the Family of Don Orione.

The Little Missionary Sisters of Charity , that is, of God, who with charity, allow others to taste the Providence of God and the maternal nature of the Church.
The Non-Seeing Sacramentines , who personify prayer in the Family, supporting the work of the Sisters, of the Priests and of the Missionaries in their charitable apostolate.
The Contemplatives of Jesus Crucified , who in the silence of the cloister continue their thanksgiving and offering to Jesus Crucified for the redemption of souls.

The Don Orione Secular Institute , lay people, men and women, consecrated with vows to live the charism of Don Orione “as a hidden yeast”, within the ordinary world of family, work and apostolate.

The Don Orione Lay Movement which is comprised of various associations and categories of lay people who “both inside and outside” the Institutes, share the spirit and the service of the charism of Don Orione.

THE SONS OF DIVINE PROVIDENCE

The life of Don Orione was founded on the idea to“embrace all souls and save each and every one of them” (Scr. 115,142), “to live for the love of the Pope and to spread, especially in the little ones, in the humble, in the people, the sweetest love for the Pope as well as full and filial obedience to his words and wishes” (Lettere II, 41-47). This necessarily implied the formation of disciples and helpers who shared the same charism and the same apostolic ideals.


Don Orione became a founder while aged only 21. He was still a clerical student. The first college, opened in Tortona (1893), already had a proper style and intent. Among the forty or so students of the first House of Divine Providence in San Bernardino (Tortona), a good third would have gone to the seminary had their families been able to pay the fees. Six of them later received the habit on the same day of the priestly ordination of Don Orione (13th April 1895). Five months later, in the first magazine called “The Spark”, they were presented with the official name : Sons of Divine Providence.
Don Orione dedicated himself to these first students, because they represented the future of his new Congregation. When they became a dozen (1895), he sent them to Genoa to complete their secondary studies under Gaspare Goggi.

Among this first group two names stand out: Felice Cribellati, who later became the first bishop from the Congregation; and Giulio Cremaschi, who, for more than 30 years, was novice master. A good beginning indeed. There will be many stars in the “Orione constellation”.

Religious formation had its beginnings in 1898 with the opening of the San Luigi boarding-school in Noto (Sicily). He sent there as assistants “only those who intend to stay with us” and told them “frankly” that the work they did down there would serve as a “true novitiate” (Scr. 10,20). Thus began the Sons of Divine Providence.

The Congregation received diocesan approval from Mgr. Bandi of Tortona with a Decree dated 21st March 1903. The rapid growth which followed can be read about in the Life of Don Orione. Two separate branches were indicated also by Don Orione: the Hermits of Divine Providence and the Brothers.

In 1913 the first missionary work outside Italy began with the departure of a priest and two brothers for Brazil, followed quickly by others for Argentina and the Holy Land. Don Orione himself was a missionary in Latin America (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Chile) in the years 1921-22 and 1934-37.
In the 20’s and 30’s, while continuing to work for young people in orphanages, agricultural colonies and schools, more importance was given to pastoral care in other areas of need: Little Cottolengo (Piccolo Cottolengo) for people with grave physical and mental disabilities, and Homes for the elderly and lonely.

There was a large increase in the numbers of the Sons of Divine Providence during the last years of the life of Don Orione, due mostly to his famous begging for vocations. This increase allowed for the opening of new works both in the fields of education and pastoral work.
Having to present the scope and program of life of the Congregation - today called the “charism” - Don Orione defined it as follows:
- “to do the will of God in the will of Blessed Peter, the supreme Pontiff”;
- “to resolve, with every work of mercy, to spread and make grow in the Christian people - and especially in the evangelization of the poor, the little ones, those afflicted with every sort of sickness and pain - a sweet love for the Vicar on earth of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Roman Pontiff, Successor of the Blessed Apostle Peter, with the idea to help strengthen, within the Church, the unity of the sons with the Father, and outside, to re-establish the broken unity with the Father”.
He wanted for his Sons a fourth vow of “special faithfulness to the Pope” and said often: “This aim - to unite to the Pope so as to instaurare omnia in Christo - is our own divine vocation”.

The Constitutions, which he himself wrote right from the beginning through to the later versions, interpret well the charism of the Congregation following indications of the Founder regarding spirituality and apostolate.

Currently the Sons of Divine Providence number 1023: 3 bishops, 728 priests, 82 brothers, 8 hermits. In formation there are 201 clerical students and 19 brothers with temporary vows, plus 45 novices. There are 7 aggregates. The average age of the religious is 50.1. They are divided into 8 Provinces, 2 Vice-Provinces and 3 Delegations.

The Sons of Divine Providence are present in 296 locations in 29 nations:

I THE BROTHERS

The Oratory (1892), the San Bernardino College (1893) and the Santa Chiara College (1894) were the first steps of the foundation of Don Orione. At the same time, the first disciples began to form the religious congregation of The Sons of Divine Providence. First came the priests, then the Hermits (1889), who were the first lay religious of the Little Work of Divine Providence.
There is no precise date known for the constitution of the branch of the Brothers, as distinct from the Hermits. In the first Rule written in 1904, article 4 reads: “...the members of this congregation are either lay or Priests, the lay members are called Brothers...” Among the first Brothers, non-hermit, were certainly Michele Volpini and Rotta Pasquale, who made their first profession of vows on 8th December 1912 in Tortona and 15th August 1920 in Bandito di Bra respectively.
From the beginning, Don Orione saw the Brothers as an irreplaceable component of his Religious Family with its varied works. They worked in all of the various houses of the Congregation: the schools, charitable institutions and the missions.
In his letter - “Begging for vocations” - of 1927, Don Orione wrote: “Because of the special nature of this congregation, I have come begging for vocations of adults, both for the priesthood and for the lay Brothers. I will accept all those who feel called. They will give real help in our Apostolate of Charity in the Colleges, youth centres, the Agricultural Colonies, Professional Schools, Hospices and the Homes for the sick, as well as those works which the Hand of Providence offer for the salvation of young people or the comfort of the humble”.

Dedicating themselves to the poor and needy, the Brothers promote the human and social values. There are 88 Brothers in the Congregation of the Sons of Divine Providence. The majority of them are in Italy (27), Argentina (24), Brazil (14). Others are in the Ivory Coast, Poland, Uruguay, Spain and elsewhere.
They work in evangelisation, the vocation apostolate, catechesis, homes for the elderly and disabled, schools and parishes. They are bursars, nurses, and officials of the Vatican Post Office. They do everything, wherever there is a need. they have their own special type of formation.
In the writings of Don Orione there are teachings of the Founder regarding them. For example, he wrote that: “the specific virtues of the lay Brothers must be: devotion, humility, tranquillity of soul, purity of conscience, docility and generosity” (Scr. 75:20).

In the Constitutions and Norms it says:
Art. 54: “Priests, students for the priesthood, lay brothers, hermits, all with different services and various tasks: we feel that we are one family”.
Art. 57: “Lay brothers have followed the invitation to embrace lay religious life and have chosen a state which is complete and meaningful in itself. Their consecration, which is a characteristic and important value, makes them fully part of the pastoral work of the Church and the Congregation in which they give witness to the excellence of religious life in itself. According to the needs of the apostolic work and giving value to the gifts they have received, they work joyfully and with humble and generous sacrifice alongside their priest confreres”.
Art. 103: “Religious brothers, after their first profession, continue their religious formation in a suitable community and, according to their personal aptitudes and the needs of the Congregation, attend courses of higher education and professional qualifications”.
Norm 31: “Lay brothers can be appointed to the following offices: the bursar of a house, the person in charge of a work and a councillor at all levels”.

HERMITS OF DIVINE PROVIDENCE

Don Orione understood right from the beginning of his foundation the importance of having a contemplative side to the Little Work of Divine Providence. He started this branch of the Hermits in 1899, with the giving of the habit to the first three candidates in Stazzanno on the 30th July. Their duties were to include prayer, penance and work in an atmosphere which was simple, austere and fraternal. The first Hermits also gave assistance and instruction to the young workers in the fields and in the Agricultural Colonies, while others helped in the restoration of ancient Hermitages.
Their first communities were in Sant’Alberto di Butrio (PV) and Monte Spineto (AL). In the early years they also worked in the Agricultural Colonies of Noto, Rome and Bagnorea, and later travelled to the Holy Land, Rhodes and Uruguay. However, they all finished up in the ancient monasteries of Sant’Alberto di Butrio (PV), Madonna delle Grazie in Sant’Oreste (Rome) and San Corrado in Noto (SR), living a life of prayer and work.
Their best representative is certainly Brother Ave Maria(1900-1964). He had become blind when only 12 years old and only after a period of misspent youth discovered the grace of God after meeting Don Orione. He became a Hermit and spent his life in penance and prayer, seeking constantly to be holy, edifying many Souls who went to him troubled in life. His fame for holiness was with him throughout his life and developed into devotion after his holy death (21-01-1964). His cause for beatification is still roceeding.

Today there are 8 Hermits of Divine Providence all in the Monastery of Sant’Alberto di Butrio (PV), to which many pilgrims travel in search of spiritual and even artistic goals. Of these 8 Hermits, 4 are young men who professed within the last 4 years. They are a grace of God for all the Little Work of Divine Providence, they are “our Moses on the mount”, as Don Orione called them. This is also a good way to prepare for the centenary celebrations of the foundation of the Hermits in 1999.

Their life is described in their “Spirit and Rule” which is a collection of Don Orione’s spiritual and disciplinary thoughts for them.
What is the importance of their presence in the Family of Don Orione and in the world today? Don Orione himself wrote immediately before their foundation:

A Hermit has always been something dear to religion. He is a being who must also live in the Work of Divine Providence, living in continual sacrifice, a constant voice of love for Jesus for the solitude of brothers.
A Hermit! A man who has renounced the joys of the family, of riches, of earthly things, who goes to the hermitage and bows down on the request of a brother, who represents God here on earth. He follows the counsels of Jesus, promising to keep them all the days of his life. He is someone who keeps always close to the Lord. The love of Jesus makes easy for him every difficulty in life, makes sweet and desirable every sacrifice.
Society is in danger, because gold is an idol which has replaced everything: faith, religion, honour. Society is in danger because dishonesty is spreading, stifling intelligence, wearing out our young people. Society is in danger because pride reigns, as does insubordination and rebellion.
To keep these three dangers away, the world needs to see before it the opposite virtues. The Hermits embody these! These servants of God will give such sermons, do much good, with their habits and style of life, so different from everyone else’s.
May these Hermits of Divine Providence grow and multiply and be perfect in their souls. They will be our brothers of prayer, brothers who cause the blessings of heaven to rain down on us, on our young people, on their studies and on all our dear benefactors.
They will open, in their meditations, a sanctuary for us, in these difficult days: a sanctuary for all the oppressed, those in pain or sorrow. Prayer will alternate with manual work. From their faces will come down the ray of peace... With their virtues and prayer the hand of God will be suspended over sinners...

THE LITTLE MISSIONARY SISTERS OF CHARITY

Don Orione understood that for an increased expansion and activity of “The Little Work of Divine Providence”, and in order to do good above all in areas more related to women, there was need of a feminine religious family: women full of life, with motherly hearts, generous and gentle, souls loved by God and tender towards their neighbour.

The Little Missionary Sisters of Charity form an Institute of Sisters founded by Don Orione on 29th June 1915 in Tortona. He personally looked after their formation, gave precise addresses on both spiritual and apostolic subjects.

The scope of the Congregation is to put charity into practice in a vast field of need, to be mothers, sisters and servants of the abandoned and rejected; missionaries both at home and “ad gentes”. They are called to be preachers in the world, to diffuse the Gospel, to unite the least, the poor and the people to the Church.
They are to work in: educating young people, removing girls and babies from the streets and vice, catechism, living in charity in the Little Cottolengo (Piccolo Cottolengo) and in works of charity for physically and mentally disabled, lepers, the elderly, the sick, young people, babies and their families and also towards “those who suffer or who are in pain”.
The missionary aspect of the Little Missionary Sisters of Charity in the Church and in the world comes from its origins: the name Missionary means “called to evangelize - and servants of the poor - because in the poor we serve, comfort and evangelize Jesus Christ”; and in the Works, following the suggestions given by the Founder: from the beginning of their foundation they have been open to the most diverse needs of the world. They are active also in the frontier missions; Don Orione himself sent the first six sisters to Argentina in 1930.

Their identity and their style of life are described in their Constitutions.
The Congregation has two internal branches: the Non-seeing Sacramentine Adorers and the enclosed community of the Contemplatives of Jesus Crucified. Currently the Congregation is divided into five Provinces. The Sisters number 850 of whom there are 105 in formation with temporary vows. There are also 39 novices. The Sisters are present in 121 places in 17 different countries: Europe: Italy, Spain, Albania, Poland, The Ukraine, Russia; Latin America: Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil, Chile, Peru; North America: U.S.A.; Africa: Cape Verde, Kenya, Madagascar, and The Ivory Coast.
The Sisters carry out their charitable activities in pastoral youth work, schools, homes for the elderly, Little Cottolengo (Piccoli Cottelengo), catechism, oratories, in the fields of new poverty and according to the needs of the times and places ... and wherever Divine Providence sends them. THE NON-SEEING SACRAMENTINE SISTERS

Don Orione had a vision of a Religious Family - The Little Missionary Sisters of Charity - made up of many branches, the members of which had to live the charity of Jesus Christ, bringing him into the midst of the world, burning victims of the love of God. Everything for the good and salvation of Souls and the people.
The non seeing Sacramentine Sisters were founded by Don Orione on 15th August 1927. They were to be an expression of the praying Christ in the Church. A similar foundation of Sisters, all blind, had been a true revolution in its time. When social discrimination, even for physical defects, was stronger than in our days, Don Orione made people aware that the charism is a gift to be shared by everyone without boundaries: “There is a place for everyone!”, “It is enough to love the Lord, the Church and one’s neighbour”. In these Sisters, the limits imposed by being blind are valued as a positive condition for their consecration and apostolic commitment to prayer and witnessing.
Their communities are enclosed, but they can make contact with people so as to give them witness, to give them spiritual comfort, for prayer. Don Orione explained: “Some Sisters suggested having a grill. But I answered: they already have one, let them be seen. even with eyes and ears closed, it is possible to love Our Lord, to sacrifice oneself for him, to be his bride”.

They share the same charism of Don Orione. Their identity can be found in Article 15 of the Constitutions of the Little Missionary Sisters of Charity: “The Sacramentine Sisters live, like Mary, in the heart of the Church. Their specific mission is adoration, thanksgiving, reparation, longing for union with Jesus, Mediator and Victim. They live the Eucharistic spirit so as to give a true witness to the apostolic life, with real liturgical piety, and fruitful obscurity”.
They now number about 50, with communities in Italy, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Kenya and Albania.

THE CONTEMPLATIVE SISTERS OF JESUS CRUCIFIED

The most recent branch of The Little Missionary Sisters of Charity is made up of the enclosed community of the Contemplative Sisters of Jesus Crucified who live in a monastery in Tortona (Italy).
The Contemplative Sisters of Jesus Crucified were only in the thoughts of Blessed Luigi Orione while he was alive and he left written an indication of his wishes.

The Sisters are enclosed, and their style, rhythm and timetable of life reflect their contemplative nature. Only young women who desire to live a life of charity, totally offering themselves and reserving themselves for God should seek admission and thus obtain blessings and fruitfulness for the apostolate of The Little Work of Divine Providence and of the Church. Older Sisters too, who have worked for many years for the poor, and who wish to retreat in order to be with that Jesus whom they have served in the poor, can have the doors of the enclosure opened to them.
This Contemplative Community was founded during the General Chapter of 1987 and was based on the writings of Don Orione and on the wishes of a group of Sisters. The first Contemplative Community opened in 1990.
The Contemplative Sisters of Jesus Crucified follow the Constitutions of the Little Missionary Sisters of Charity and their life is regulated by particular Rules, approved of by the competent Ecclesiastical Authorities.

Their specific aim is:
“to live as a holocaust in perfect charity for the service of God, for the good of the Church and of the poorest of the poor. In the contemplation of God, through a simple, silent, hidden and sacrificed life with Christ in God, hoping to realise the project of Blessed Luigi Orione to INSTAURARE OMNIA IN CHRISTO, to favour unity with the Pope, the poor and the active Sisters.”

THE DON ORIONE SECULAR INSTITUTE

The history and identity of the Don Orione Secular Institute can be traced to the desire and initiative of Don Orione himself.
In Article 7 of the first Constitutions written by him in 1904, he opened the doors of the Little Work of Divine Providence to those lay people who “thirsted wholeheartedly for perfection, and were willing to take vows, if permitted”.

At that time there was no such thing as lay consecration. Secular Institutes only began in 1947 with the document “Provida Mater Ecclesia”. The Founder’s intuition came to maturity when, in 1959, the then Superior General, Fr. Carlo Pensa and other priests, launched the Don Orione Secular Institute as a “branch” of that “single plant, but having several branches, but only one sap” (Don Orione) that is the Little Work of Divine Providence.
The Secular Institute is made up of consecrated lay people with vows, living in their home (secular) environment. They do not “leave” their homes or places of work, but stay where they are, hidden in the world, but present as “yeast”. They have no exterior signs, or communities. They live the Orionine charism, they find the time for formation and meet up on occasion for retreats and days of recollection, etc.

They have a “Rule of life” which contains guidelines on their structures and way of living. The Bishop of Tortona, Martino Canessa, issued the decree of canonical recognition on 13-05-1997.

Today, the feminine branch of the Don Orione Secular Institute is quite widely spread especially in Italy, Argentina and Brazil. Smaller groups exist also in Chile, Uruguay and Britain.
They have a central headquarters and three regional centers (Italy, Argentina and Brazil).
The male branch, not so numerous, has not yet been formed into a Secular Institute, but does follow the same spiritual path and style of life.

THE ORIONINE LAY MOVEMENT

The Orionine charism, a particular gift of the Spirit to help us follow Christ and live the Gospel, for the good of the Church and its mission, is “Catholic”. That means it has a universal nature, for all peoples and cultures and is relevent in all ages and historical situations. It is for all the categories of the Christian people. Also for the laity!

In fact, the life of Don Orione relates how he involved the laity right from the beginning of the Little Work of Divine Providence. He educated them spiritually. He prepared them to help “inside and outside” of the works the apostolate of “charity which opens the eyes of the faith” and which “binds the little ones, the poor, the people, to the Church and to the Pope, so as to instaurare omnia in Christo”.

The presence of lay people, as individuals and in associations, is an integral part of the identity and history of the Little Work of Divine Providence.
In the present ecclesiastical climate, the Orionine Family has begun a unified project of the Orionine Lay Movement. It is the fruit born of the guidelines of the General Chapters of the Sons of Divine Providence (1992) and the Little Missionary Sisters of Charity (1993) and of the letter of the Superior General, Fr. Roberto Simionato written on 18-12-1995.

Wherever the Orionine Family is present, the priests, sisters and lay Orionines have started a coordinating body of the OLM as a stable structure of communion. Some of its guidelines are as a point of reference for a unified spiritual journey. It has two specific services which it provides: to promote the “connections” and the “formation in the charism” of the many different forms of lay Orionines.

PRINCIPAL LAY ASSOCIATIONS

ORIONINE OBLATES

Within the Orionine Lay Movement, a new experience was created by a few people who expressed the desire to “consecrate” their lives to the Lord, with Don Orione, even though they did not wish to profess vows because of other choices in life.
Recently, in various localities (London, Belo Horizonte, Montevideo, Palermo, etc.)some groups of “Orionine Lay Oblates” have developed. Other individuals make their spiritual journey alongside existing groups of the Don Orione Secular Institute.
Who are these lay people? What do they hope to achieve?
They are men and women, married and single, of various ages, professions and social positions. In common they have the joy of having “met with Don Orione” through his works and his Religious, and the willingness to make of this friendship a dynamic motivation for their spiritual lives and their civil and ecclesial commitment.
They wish to offer themselves (oblation) in a permanent, ecclesial and communitarian way, within a group. They meet up in group sessions and retreats. They pray together and exchange life experiences. They study together the Orionine spirit to become “Christians like him” and to live in his style in every place. They also as lay people, bring to the Church and to the world, the “Orionine treatment” (charism) composed of its love of the Church and of the Pope through charity.

It is a way of being Orionine today but not institutionalised, even though some ideals and practical guidelines exist.
To be an oblate is different to belonging to a simple association of lay people, and is different also from the lay consecration of the Don Orione Secular Institute. It is something new! Oblation is more than association because of its commitment for life before God in a stable way. It is less than consecration because it does not include the radical offering of oneself with chastity in celibacy, poverty and obedience. These are differences in the “forms” of life. But that which is important is ... in the “substance” of love.
Perhaps other lay people will join, supported by the men and women Religious of Don Orione, to help us live our particular spiritual and apostolic “devotion” to the Lord and to our Orionine Family, sharing the spirit of the Founder?

THE FORMER PUPILS

Right from the beginnings of the Congregation, Don Orione wanted this Association. He started it in Tortona in 1934. Putting great value on the exceptional education obtained in our schools, the Association wishes to help the Former Pupils to live a Christian life and to be apostles, realizing the ideals of the Founder, to be faithful to the Church, to the Pope and the Bishops, serving the poor.
The Association has its own Statutes and is divided into local and national sections with a central presidency.

FRIENDS OF DON ORIONE

The Friends of Don Orione came into being during the lifetime of the Founder. This stable group met both in order to receive and do good following in the footsteps of Don Orione and his communities.
The Association was founded in 1940 to take care of and develop the patrimony of faith and charity left by the Founder.
The Association has its own Statutes and is made up of both local and national groups.

THE EXPERT VOLUNTEER SERVICE - ORIONE 84

This is a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) for volunteers who wish to cooperate in the development of countries and peoples and spread the culture of dialogue and solidarity. They carry out medium and short term activities and programmes in developing countries, helping in the selection, education and commitment of volunteers in social work and as a source of information. It is recognised by the Italian State and has its own Statutes.

THE “TRA NOI” MOVEMENT

The “Tra Noi” Movement was started by Don Sebastiano Plutino, a priest of the Sons of Divine Providence, with the aim of “welcoming and helping every person, especially the most marginalised and helpless, as children of the one Father, without distinction of class, religion or culture; promoting an authentic, universal fraternity in the spirit of Blessed Luigi Orione, the inspiration for the Movement” (Art. 2 of the Statutes).
Its activities include “the welcoming of each person and brotherly help; meetings about spiritual, religious and social formation; meetings to do with socio-cultural and professional development; works and formative and recreational centres which promote their spirituality and other activities which correspond to the charism of the movement and to the needs of the times” (Art. 4 of the Statutes).
The “Tra Noi” Movement is recognised as a “Private Association of the Faithful” (7th December 1995) on the basis of its own Statutes.

THE “MARIA DI NAZARET” INSTITUTE

Within the “Tra Noi” Movement, grew a group of consecrated lay women who call themselves the “Maria di Nazaret” Institute. “A special bond unites our Institute with the Tra Noi Movement which shares our aims” (Constitutions, Art. 3).
These consecrated women are recognised by the Church as a “Pious Union”.
Article 2 of their Constitutions reads: “docile to the Holy Spirit, available like Mary of Nazareth in the humble service of Christ in our brothers, and faithful to the spirituality of Blessed Luigi Orione, we want to aim towards our own sanctification:
- following Christ, chaste, poor and obedient, in the ordinary conditions of life so as to stay, like Jesus, in the world, but not belonging to it (cfr. Jn. 17:16);
- sharing with a missionary spirit the life and problems of humanity and being the salt, light and yeast of truth in charity among them (cfr. Eph. 4:15);
- carrying out the welcoming charism of the Institute towards everyone, especially the little ones, as brothers, promoting their dignity and living presence within the Church;
- working competently, always aware of the signs of the times and ready to respond to the needs of the Church.

THE ORIONINE VOLONTEER MOVEMENT

This is a lay association begun in 1993 in Rome. Its aims are to commit all its members to donate freely their time and energies in a Christian spirit and in a sense of solidarity to those in need. It is recognized by Italy and is governed by its own rules.
It is becoming quite widespread in Italy, especially in the various works of the Sons of Divine Providence, where it forms a judicial and formative framework for the work of the various lay volunteers.
